KPFZ Web Documentation 2/8/2023 Alan Fletcher
3/19/23 Whack-a-mole zone
The black control bar has disappeared totally, so you have to do things through the "Administer" link on the User Panel. To get back to the Web Page click "Home".
At present I can see no way to "flush all caches". Stay tuned.
3/1/23
Drupal seems to be back the way it used to be, so the Black control bar is visible and active.
The new procedure (link below) will always work, so I've left it in.
2/3/23
There has been a change to our web system Drupal, so that some of the instructions are out of date.
In previous versions after you logged in you could click on the Black control bar at the top.
You now have to go into "Administration" mode to do some things, and then return to "Web" Mode.
See https://docs.kpfz.org/kpfz-webeditor-admin.php for the new procedure.
Note: this is a very rough cut, just to get things going.
Some of these are video tutorials recorded on Zoom, with detailed notes.
Others are screenshots (a little out of date, but generally similar).
1. Selecting the Monitor Input
2. Log In to kpfz.org
KPFZ Web Editor VIDEO Tutorial : Login
Log In on the Volunteers Page
When you have finished, Log Out.
When an administrator adds you as a user you will recieve a welcome email.
Note that your Login name is your user name, not your email. It can include spaces, but must be typed in exactly.
3. Adding a Post
Most entries on the web-site are in the form of a Post on an existing Page.
This example shows how to create a post, which would normally go on the Front Page
KPFZ Web Editor VIDEO Tutorial: Adding a Post
- Click on "Content" on the top, black menu bar.
- Click on "Add Content" a few lines down.
- Select the Content Type : we want Post
- Enter a title for the post
- Enter the content in the big box. But I recommend first setting up the other information
- Select the Post Type - in this case General Interest. Board Meetings would be "Station Business"
- Now scroll down to "URL Path Settings". In the box, enter a short descriptive name, without spaces.
You can use some symbols like "+", "-" and "_". For example: MyTestPost or My-Test-Post
- Then select the publishing options. You always want to set it to Published (unless it's a draft that you haven't finished yet).
- Check Promoted to Front Page (though we left this off for a training post)
- Check Sticky At Top of Lists so this new post will show first
- Now go back and work on the content itself. It has a basic "What you see is what you get" interface, with keys for Bold, Italics etc. You can add pictures, but that's described in another tutorial.
- Put your cursor at the bottom of the text, and find the "Teaser Break", which looks like lines on a page with a Red break. We usually want to show the whole post. If you don't do this. readers will have to click "More"
- You can Preview the page to check the formatting (Note: it shows the post twice, once with just the "teaser" text, and the other with the full text.)
- Save the post. You will now see it on the "Old News" page (because we did NOT say "Promoted to the Front Page")
- Click on the little box at the top left of the screen (which might be either the KPFZ or the Drupal icon) and then "Flush all caches" (If you don't do this, it might be an hour or two before all users see the new post.)
Note:
- There is a small mistake in the video tutorial. On Windows when you press Enter you get a paragraph break. If you want the next line without a paragraph break press Control-Enter (not Space-Enter).
- In the video the new post is saved, and then edited. The next section shows how to edit an existing post.
4. Editing a Post
- Find the post, which will either be on the front page "KPFZ 88.1 FM" or on the "Old News" page.
- Click on the title of the post, and you will be given two options : View or Edit
- Click Edit - You can now change anything to do with the post.
- Save it and then left-click on the top-left Icon on the black bar (which will usually be the small KPFZ Icon), and select Flush All Caches, so that everyone will see it immediately.
5. Adding a Link and Uploading a file if needed.
There is a "screenshot" tutorial at
https://docs.kpfz.org/kpfz-webeditor-links.html
- Before uploading a file, make sure it has a meaningful name.
- Edit the content where you want to insert the file, Set your cursor where you want the link to appear.
- Click on the Link button (link of a chain) -- A Link form pops up
- If you are referring to an external location, enter it. Otherwise upload it as in the next few steps.
- Select "Browse the server" at the bottom ... if the file is already on the system, select it
- If not, on the top menu bar, click Upload
- File ... Choose File (for Windows, browse on your computer)
- Click Upload ... the file will appear in the list. Select it
- Click Insert File ... add the text for the link etc
- Click OK to insert the link
6. Adding an Image and Uploading a file if needed.
There is a "screenshot" tutorial at
https://docs.kpfz.org/kpfz-webeditor-images.html
- Before uploading an image, make sure it has a meaningful name, eg MyImage-221231.jpg
- Edit the content where you want to insert the image. Set your cursor where you want the image to appear.
- Click on the Image button -- An Image Properties form pops up
- If you are referring to an external location, enter it. Otherwise upload it as in the next few steps.
- Select "Browse the server" at the bottom ... if the file is already on the system, select it
- On the top menu bar, click Upload
- File ... Choose File (for Windows, browse on your computer)
- Click Upload ... the file will appear in the list. Select it
- Click Insert File ... add the text for the link etc
- Change the Width to 80% (Tip: add the percentage sign, and then change the number)
- Change the Height to Blank
- Click OK to insert the image
7. Fancy Formatting (Requires HTML knowledge)
8. Creating a Page for a Show
9. Changing the Banners (Covid, Fire, Station .. )
The following document describes how to activate the "Banners" which are displayed at the top of every KPFZ.org page.
This was originally intended just for Fire and similar emergencies, but has been extended to covid19, with three levels of emregency .. "Red", "Yellow" and "Green", plus a KPFZ informational banner in "Blue".
This is described in kpfz-webeditor-banners.php
10. The Life Cycle of a post
A post will usually start on the Front Page, and you will want it to be First on the page.
This is done by setting it to "Promote to Front Page" and "Sticky at Top of Lists". The latest post will be at the top.
But sometimes you want an older post to be at the top. You will have to edit the newer post so it is NOT "Sticky".
After a "reasonable" interval, posts should be retired off the front page. Typically do this a week or so after the event. Edit the post, and UN-CLICK "Promote to Front Page" and "Sticky at the top of lists".
The post will disappear from the Front Page, but will still be on the "Old News" page.
Finally, after a couple of months, they should be archived. Edit the post and check the "Archived" box.
A few posts are not archived, such as the "Emergency" post.
Note:
- The date on a post is the date it was created, and does NOT change if the post is edited. For long-lived posts like the "Upcoming Shows" you should add a line saying (eg) "Updated 1/2/23"
